Tallun’s Political Journey

Tallun’s journey through BlueSky Mind Studio is leading him toward a “Greener” career pathway.

Tallun joined BlueSky Mind Studio in early 2025 driven by his aspiration to explore his career opportunities. With support from NDIS Employment Coaches Amy and Jodie, Tallun explored his skills, interests, and personal values. It quickly became clear that he possesses strong communication skills, a passion for learning, excellent attention to detail, and a genuine commitment to making a difference in his community.

To further explore career pathways that matched his interests and values, Tallun began volunteering in food service at the Christie Downs Community Centre. During his time at the centre, he helped with food preparation, meal service, and supporting community members who visited the space.

As the discovery process progressed, Tallun’s broader interests began to emerge. While hospitality provided valuable experience, it became evident that Tallun had a strong passion for politics, advocacy, and civic engagement.

With that passion in mind, the BlueSky Mind Studio team supported Tallun to work toward his career goals through confidence-building activities and help with online applications.

The BlueSky Mind Studio team notified Tallun of an upcoming YMCA Youth Parliament camp in Adelaide, where they assisted him to write an application to attend, as well as reach out to community stakeholders to seek sponsorship.

Tallun was successfully accepted to attend the camp, where over four days he connected with like-minded young people who shared his passion for local government. Together, they took part in a range of activities including public speaking, bill writing, debating and visits to Parliament House.

At the camp, Tallun presented a bill advocating for First Nations history and culture to be included in the SACE curriculum in South Australian schools. The bill passed successfully within the Youth Parliament, strengthening Tallun’s confidence and motivation to pursue opportunities in politics.

After the camp, Tallun was soon appointed as a member of the YMCA Youth House of Assembly, a role in which he represents the youth of South Australia and serve as Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs and Reconciliation.

When appointing Tallun, the 30th Youth Governor of South Australia shared:

“You have greatly impressed me with your passion, drive and desire to shape your community”

Through his experiences, including undertaking work experience for the South Australian Labor Party, Tallun began to clarify his core values and the principles he wants to champion in his political career: environmental protection, tourism, social equality, and advocacy for the LGBTQ+ community.

With these values in mind, Tallun explored potential pathways across different political organisations. After careful consideration, he chose to pursue opportunities with the South Australian Greens Party, whose progressive policies closely align with his own vision and goals.

The BlueSky Mind Studio team supported Tallun in reaching out to political representatives, making phone calls, sending emails, and networking with relevant contacts. During this process, Tallun also visited the Mayor of Onkaparinga, Moria Were, who provided valuable guidance and suggestions for further connections within the political sector. This meeting also provided an opportunity to capture photos and experiences that were later included in Tallun’s Visual Resume, highlighting his journey and achievements.

After reaching out to the Greens Party, they responded and offered Tallun a work experience opportunity! This included commencing training modules and assisting with polling booth operations during the South Australian State Election. Tallun embraced this opportunity with enthusiasm, demonstrating professionalism, reliability, and strong organisational skills.

As Tallun continued to grow his skills and show commitment within the political environment, his contributions were recognised by the Australian Greens - Tallun has now secured a paid position with the Greens, starting later this year! His role will involve data entry and administrative support, playing to his strengths in organisation, attention to detail, and his passion for contributing to political processes.

BlueSky Mind Studio will continue to provide post-placement support to ensure Tallun’s ongoing success. This includes assistance with workplace adjustments, skill development, and ongoing communication with his employer, helping make the role sustainable and meaningful.

This role is an exciting next step for Tallun as he continues building his skills and pursuing a future in politics.

Tallun’s journey through BlueSky Mind Studio and our Customised Employment model is a wonderful showcase of how passion, persistence, and the right support can lead to meaningful career outcomes.
